Hello everyone!! Today I am planning to give you guys a lecture but before I started let me introduce myself. My name is Aldrin Emilian Loly, I am currently a student in a school named Singapore International School, Medan. This will be my last year staying in high school and it seems that I’ll be leaving soon for university. I was told to give a lecture all of a sudden but just now earlier, my friend asked me or rather concerned, about whether to pursue his dreams or or follow his parents wishes, the safe route that his parents wanted. I think this is rather a difficult decision, so I’d like to tell you my thoughts on it.
These days people seem to know too much, however, we don’t really know who we are. We don’t know what we like, we don’t know what makes us sad, we don’t seem to know. If we were to take a test, if you were to grab any student, a grade or a high schooler, and asked them, what their dream is and they don’t know even if they do have a dream and you asked them why do you have that dream, they can’t answer you,what they’re good at. They have no dreams. In my class, all my friends I asked them about this and I found out that they had the same problem, “How should I live my life?” they asked. I want to ask you this question, let’s say you are given only one day and you must be happy on that day, I know this question seems silly, but do you actually have something you need to do if you had to be happy? Because it seems like that during school to most people, if you had only one day holiday and you have to relieve all the stress in one day, you want to play games, eat good food and do all these things but you have to be good to your parents too, so much you need to do, but what would really make me happy? Make you happy? I myself couldn’t find the answer. No matter how much you read and no matter how much you think, I couldn’t work out who I really was. Given that I have yet to reach success. It’s easy to reach a destination on the highway, you can reach your destination quickly. But if you make a detour,you’ll see the beautiful scenery you never noticed. The will be uphills and downhills and you will realize later on that they were beautiful and meaningful. There are people who were students, who were like me and you who went to school and worked part-time, then suddenly I have reached the point on going to university. I didn’t actually know what to do, I didn’t what school to go, what application needed to filled and what personal statement I need to write and now I wanted to to go to Waseda university in Japan and now started filling up papers hoping to get accepted. Do you think I was happy? No, I was scared, because it wasn’t my achievement, I was just extremely lucky. Thing is, if I did more, I’d lose everything so that’s why I started to hide, behind a shadow who I don’t really know and I regret it.
You see, some of my friends, who had gone to other countries, some in Singapore, some in Japan and some in London. they continued the challenge even if they failed, they fought their fate and continue their paths lead to success. I regretted so much, I imagined how beautiful it must’ve been for them. I regretted it that I avoided experiencing up and downs because I was scared. Now I want to see the beautiful scenery of the uphills and downhills myself. That’s why I decided to study at Japan, it will be hard to go up and scary to go down, but still, I’ll give it a try. That is the reason why my first step is to write this, “The Journey Of My Life” to show my accomplishments and how this goes. It is never too late for you try.
